The Health Department oversees the provision of health services in the district. Working with several other partners, we deliver primary health care in the areas of health promotion and education, preventive, curative, palliative and rehabilitative health services.
With 417 health workers and 462 Village Health Teams (VHTs), we provide health care services through the health units.
The range of services include: maternity and child health services, control of communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, control of the spread of disease in the district, rural ambulance services, primary health care services, vector control, environment sanitation, health education. Other tangible results are a reduction in infant mortality rates from 30/1000 live births in 2015/2016 to 16/1000 live births in 2018/2019.
We have consistently attained a high ranking in the national league table and rated among the first best 15 districts as 5th 2014/2015, 2nd 2015/2016, 15th 2016/2017 and 4th 2018/2019. Progress in improving the health standards of our community has been attained as indicated by: a penta vaccine coverage of 84.2%, 73.8% 2019/2020 deliveries of pregnant mothers in health units, a 1.3 out-patient department (OPD) per capita utilization, and HIV prevalence rate of 1.6%, latrine coverage of 98.2% (LQAS 2018).
